For centuries scholars have tried to determine what exactly it is that dreams mean. To some people they are warning signs, while to others they are a sign of things that may happen. But what really is the purpose of what dreams mean?
It is not possible for anyone to tell us beyond the shadow of a doubt the meaning of a dream. But scientists believe they are necessary and if you do not dream, or are woken up during a dream, it can cause mental distress. They could be a way that the brain keeps itself functioning or a way to file away things that have not been properly dealt with during the course of a day. This might explain why something which happens during the day is often dreamed about.
The interpretation of dreams has been in existence a great deal longer than any of us has been around. You even read in the Bible about people having visions and dreams about daily events and things to come. Some people believe that dreams are sent to us to give us something to look forward to. Although I don’t know about this I have had some particularly scary ones and I wouldn’t look forward to anything like that happening to me!
There are a number of characteristic dreams sequences that have laid themselves open for interpretation; for instance if an animal appears in the dream it could be a good or bad symbol of our own personal traits. Cars might mean that you are moving in a particular direction, while ex-husbands? Lets just say that these dreams are best left forgotten.
Many people have their own interpretations of their own dreams. While these may not be pertinent to other people they certainly have a place in the lives of the people experiencing them. If you dream that you are flying it could mean quite literally that you are in a high place spiritually in you life right now, whereas if you dream of falling, it may mean a loss of self control. I regularly dream about my teeth falling out and this can mean some kind of loss. So I have to ask myself, have I really had that many losses? I suppose the meaning of dreams is all very personal.
