I have just heard one of the biggest news that I am pretty sure that a lot of boxing fans would like to hear. Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be coming back in 2009. He is coming back to challenge the best pound-for-pound fighter, Manny Pacquaio.
It has been stated that Mayweather’s cousin Janelle got a call from the fighter after the stoppage of De la Hoya. She stated that Floyd wants to come back to challenge the pride of the Philipines. Mayweather Sr. also stated that he got a message from his son Monday, 12/8/08, about training with him. But he will still have his uncle Roger in the corner as well. So pretty much, it is a little family reunion.
All I want to know is if this is a fight that Mayweather really wants. Pacquaio is no pushover, and he is a lot faster than Mayweather, and also throws a lot more punches than Mayweather as well. The thing is Mayweather hasn’t been active since his stoppage over Ricky, the Hitman, Hatton. If Mayweather were to really face Pacquaio, then he will need a tune up fight.
He has just been active for so long, and Pacquiao has already had three tremendous fights this year. Sionce beating Oscar De la Hoya, I will guarantee that Paquaio will be fighter of the year. He has gone and defeated Juan Manuel Marques in super featherweight, took David Diaz’s belt in lightweight, and stopped one of the most best known boxers in the history of the sport in welterweight. Those are credentials of a pound for pound fighter. He did everything in one single year.
So lets look at the analysis and see who will be able to pull of the fight. Mayweather has had trouble in the past with southpaws. He had definite trouble when facing Zab Judah. But unlike Super Judah, Pacquaio does not tire out as the fight goes on. We will have to see the Mayweather that beat Gatti. If we see that, then I think that he will be able to win the fight. If Mayweather catches Pacquaio with a good shot, he has the chance of finishing him off. The way that people knows when Manny Pacquaio is hurt is when he punches back recklessly.
Manny Pacquaio on the other hand needs to do what he does best. That is stay in the pocket and beat Mayweather to the punch. He has the hand speed to do so. Also he needs to throw a lot more punches than Mayweather in the fight. He will have to fire in flurries and give Mayweather not break throughout the whole fight. If he does that, he will carry out a victory. That is the only way in my mind that I think that Pacquaio caould beat Mayweather, is to throw more punches than Mayqweather.
So ho will I pick to win the fight. All and all, I think that Pacquaio will carry the vitory be unanimous decision.
