There are many stressful situations in today’s society that can leave us feeling rundown and feeling stretched to our capacities. With work, family life and all of the other responsibilities that plague our days it can be difficult letting it all go and finding peace. But peace is exactly what the body needs to function properly. Many people find that they cannot sleep at night with all of their responsibilities running through their minds.

There is a way to bring peace to your life and that is through meditation. It is a practice that dates back thousands of years and has help people find the peace and solace they need to salve their emotional and physical wounds left by their troubles. In this article we will cover the basics of meditation and how it can help you live a better life.

Is meditation part of a religion?

Yes, meditation is part of many religions. Most people associate meditation with Buddhism or Hinduism but in reality there are many religions that practice some form of meditation. It may be the Catholic who uses his or her prayers as a way to relieve stress and help them form a deeper connection to God. Even people who are not religious often practice meditation as a way to help them unwind and begin to think clearly about problems that may be plaguing their lives.

What are some forms of meditation?

Most often the forms of meditation are associated with different religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and even Christianity. But there are different ways that each form is used. The Chinese Qi Gong uses meditation as a way to open up the Qi (Chi) and allow the natural energy lines of the body to flow.

Many times even within a religion there are several different forms of meditation that are used to bring peace and tranquility to the user. In Hinduism there are six different forms of meditative practices that the believer uses for different purposes. They involve different sitting positions and different thoughts that the user concentrates upon.

How can meditation relieve stress?

Meditation is a great way to relieve stress. When the mind and body is full of stress the spirit and mind begins to decline. By assuming a static position, or even using the dynamic meditation principles, the body is brought to awareness by the user. You allow your breathing to come under control and begin to acknowledge the pressures and thoughts that are plaguing you.

After you have acknowledged the stressful situation you allow your mind to work through the process carefully. You simply acknowledge the problem and then let your mind begin to flow. If you use this in conjunction with relaxation training it helps the body begins to relax and lose its tenseness.

What are the physical postures for meditation?

With each different form or religion that teaches meditation as one of its fundamental practices you can see that there are several different positions that are important in the meditation process. Here are a few of the physical postures that are important in most meditation methods: the spine, the hands, the eyes, the focus and cross legged sitting.

The spine is often positioned in an upright position to encourage positive spiritual energy to flow through the body. The hands are kept in a variety of gestures that are said to effect consciousness. The eyes are usually kept shut so that outside disturbances are kept out. The focus is where you concentrate internally on a single thought, prayer or your breathing.

The cross legged sitting position is one that many people deviate on because not everyone is comfortable sitting in a meditative position for a long period of time. They should be in a position that allows comfort so that they are not plagued by physical pains during their concentrative period.

Buddhist meditation requires a strong discipline, commitment, and a will to block out all the distractions of everyday life. When the person is totally and utterly at peace form their surroundings nirvana can be achieved. Buddhists have practiced meditation for centuries to reach a higher being and learn the true meaning of life by sacrificing from oneself from material objects. Buddhists believe desire causes pain and suffering, so no desire and the will not to pursue material goods, enlightenment can be achieved. With meditation, this can be used as a “distraction” from the material and to stay purified.
There are two central kinds of Buddhist meditation which are Tranquility or Samantha meditation and Insight or Vispassana meditation.

Tranquility or Samantha meditation

The goal of tranquility or Samantha is to focus the mind and train it to concentrate. There are four stages to Samantha meditation which include detachment from the outside world, concentration, joy, and equanimity. Samantha can also be broken into forty different types of kammatthanas which a person should choose of his own inclination. Virtues like kindness, devices like light or colors, grotesque things like a dead body, and recollections like sayings of Buddha are just a few of the forty.

Insight or Vispassana meditation

Insight or Vispassana meditation goal is to focus on the Buddhists truths, to reflect inside. Unlike tranquility meditation which focuses on concentration, insight meditation focuses on mindfulness. Mindfulness is trying to understand the object and learn its meaning not just to focus on it. If one focuses on a pencil, focus on what the purpose and meaning is of the pencil, what is it made of, and why does it exist. There are also different stages of insight meditation which are walking and sitting meditation.

Walking meditation takes a very strong discipline to achieve. The practitioner must focus and relax in a quite place blocking out the surroundings and focusing on the movements of the walking. If one can achieve this and focus on nothing but the walking a blissfulness can occur.

Sitting meditation is more commonly practiced. Breathing is the central focus of the sitting meditation. Everything else should be out of ones mind and the focus is directly on the breathing, from in and out and again and again.

The goal here is to be applied to everyday life. Live in the moment and not think about the past or future when doing a specific task. When cooking focus on the cooking, when eating focus on the eating and enjoy the food, when sleeping focus on the sleeping and enjoy the sleep. Buddhist mediation is meant to enrich and enhance lives and to have a better understanding of the world we live in. Anyone can practice meditation, not just a Buddhist. Buddhist meditation is a form to find inner peace with oneself. While the average man may not find total nirvana and spiritual peace, meditation still provide a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in every day life.

Self-criticism is a common pattern faced by those on the path of manifesting their dream. I guess it shouldn’t be so surprising as we grow up going to school and having our performance judged and measured all along the way.

The thing is nobody is ever perfect in all ways. We’re not meant to be perfect. We’re just meant to be ourselves.

Self-criticism can take the wind from beneath your wings and cause you to doubt yourself, your actions and your worth. It can slow or even stop any true progress and movement toward your most heart-felt dreams.

By beginning to see this pattern of looking down on yourself, you are allowing yourself a new choice. A choice to give yourself a positive, encouraging message rather than a discouraging negative one. This allows you to create a much more joyful reality and helps you to move forward in the direction of your dreams with greater speed and confidence.

Imagine what true progress you can make toward your dreams if you have a mean little criticizer on your shoulder, watching and judging your every move. How motivated do you feel when you are put down?

I’m guessing not at all. So why do this to yourself?

Now I want you to imagine the progress you would make if you had a loving encouraging person beside you celebrating every little success you have, every little good thing you do, celebrating when you feel good and inspired, celebrating you for just being you!

Imagine the motivation and confidence you would feel with this kind of encouragement! Imagine how much easier the journey to your dreams would be.

You may think that if you judge your progress that you will be more perfect. The truth is, you will just be more held back, restrained, and your true passion will never come out.

Allow yourself to let go of the idea of perfection, and replace it with authenticity. Allow yourself to be you as you are. Do your best, but do not require perfection. Instead, give love and encouragement instead of judgement and criticism.

Why not begin today to set this voice of judgement aside?

Instead, choose to see yourself with eyes of love. Be that loving voice of encouragement and acknowledge only the good things you do. That criticizing part of us can come out all too often, better to begin to develop your own loving voice of support that can cancel out that critical part of you. A voice that helps you to move forward perhaps imperfectly, but at least it will be a move toward your dreams.

Take action!

Begin now by keeping a journal or paper nearby to write down all of the good things you are doing, the good things about yourself as you go about your day. Perhaps you can note your successes, however small and seemingly insignificant they might seem. Give yourself the gift of acknowledgement and appreciation of the good that you do.

Celebrate the small steps you take and you will only want to take more. And when you see yourself with love, you not only feel better, you have such a deep spiritual power rise up in you, a feeling that you can do anything.

So begin today to be more loving to yourself and you will enjoy a much more loving, joyful, abundant reality. Be more loving to yourself and you will find the motivation you need to do what it takes to create your most heart-felt dreams.
